Answer: Many of our customers live where winter and spring seasons have low night time temperatures. To compensate, we recommend using a heating mat for propagation and growing. Most garden centers offer them, and you can purchase online, too. Those with a built-in thermostat work best, otherwise a standard mat will do. You can purchase from Amazon.com at reasonable prices. (Link opens in new window.) The size of the mat is not important. Any mat that can approximately cover the growing compartment area will do. What is important is that you can regulate the temperature. The temperature inside the growing compartment should not go over 73 degrees F. The footprint of the machine is 18" x 24," the growing compartment is about 15" x 14". If you already own a heating mat, you may purchase a thermostat to regulate the temperature. For example, this thermostat available on Amazon.com will allow for heat control of Hydrofarm brand and other heat mats. Locate the heat mat under the machine around the growing compartment.
